Google brings Gemini AI navigation to walkers and cyclists

The update builds on Gemini’s debut in Maps in November 2025, when the AI assistant was first introduced for drivers.

Google has expanded its Gemini artificial intelligence assistant in Google Maps to support voice-based navigation for pedestrians and cyclists, making the experience more interactive and hands-free across different travel modes.

The update builds on Gemini’s debut in Maps in November 2025, when the AI assistant was first introduced for drivers. That rollout allowed users to ask conversational questions about their routes without taking their eyes off the road.

Now, walkers and cyclists can activate Gemini by saying “Hey Google” or tapping the microphone or Gemini icon during navigation. Pedestrians can ask about nearby attractions, restaurants, or amenities, while cyclists can check their estimated time of arrival, upcoming calendar events, or dictate messages—all without touching their devices.

Google says the goal is to improve safety and convenience by reducing the need for typing or swiping while in motion. The assistant supports multi-turn conversations, enabling users to refine queries—for example, asking about vegan restaurants along a route and then following up with parking options nearby.

Beyond directions, Gemini acts as a personal guide by suggesting points of interest and offering context-aware insights. It also integrates with phone services, allowing users to send texts, check schedules, or add stops to a trip using voice commands.

The feature is rolling out globally on Android and iOS devices where Gemini is supported, with iOS users reporting immediate access and Android availability expanding steadily. It is not yet available on the web version of Google Maps.

This enhancement reflects Google’s broader push to embed Gemini across its ecosystem, transforming Maps from a static navigation tool into a conversational travel assistant that adapts to user needs in real time.
