Islamabad: The government has announced plans to expand the country’s telecom spectrum to 600 megahertz, a step expected to boost internet capacity by nearly 200 per cent and deliver faster, more reliable connectivity nationwide. The update was shared in the National Assembly on Thursday.
During Question Hour, the parliamentary secretary for IT and Telecom explained that the surge in internet demand over the past two years, driven by online education, digital government services, employment platforms and business activity, has placed heavy strain on existing networks. This has led to slower speeds and frequent service interruptions.
She said the spectrum expansion would ease congestion, improve data flow and reduce disruptions, with noticeable improvements expected by the end of February once the process is complete.
The secretary also pointed out that in many regions, the challenge was not the absence of telecom operators but technical limitations such as restricted spectrum, backhaul congestion, electricity shortages and delays in regulatory approvals.
Officials described the initiative as a key step toward strengthening Pakistan’s digital infrastructure and ensuring smoother internet access for citizens and businesses.
