Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said Thursday he was unaware of the details of a framework agreement announced by US President Donald Trump after discussions with NATO chief Mark Rutte. Speaking in Nuuk, Nielsen stressed that Greenland and Denmark must be directly involved in any negotiations concerning the island.

“Only Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark have the mandate to make agreements about our territory,” Nielsen told reporters. He added that Greenland’s sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected under international law.

Trump revealed during the World Economic Forum in Davos that he had reached a “framework” deal on Greenland, while also ruling out the use of force to assert US interests in the territory. The announcement followed earlier remarks in which Trump had suggested seizing Greenland, a proposal that sparked strong opposition from Danish and Greenlandic officials.

Nielsen welcomed Trump’s decision to abandon the idea of force but admitted he had not been informed about the contents of the agreement. “I do not know what is in the deal about my country,” he said, noting Greenland had not been part of the discussions.

A source familiar with the talks said the framework included plans for the United States and Denmark to revisit the 1951 defense pact covering Greenland. The source clarified that transferring US military bases to American sovereignty was not discussed.

Greenland’s Deputy Prime Minister Mute Egede also voiced concern, writing on social media that it was “unacceptable to attempt to hand our land to others.”

The episode underscores Greenland’s determination to safeguard its autonomy and ensure its voice is heard in any future negotiations involving its territory.
