Minneapolis protests erupt after second fatal shooting by federal agents

Protesters marched through the city on Sunday, chanting “ICE out now” and “our streets,” while carrying signs reading “Stop killing us” and “Alex should be here.”

Minneapolis : Anger and grief swept through Minneapolis over the weekend as hundreds of residents took to the streets following the killing of a second U.S. citizen this month by federal immigration agents. Demonstrators denounced the crackdown as “inhumane” and accused the government of tearing families apart.

The latest victim, 37-year-old intensive care nurse Alex Pretti, was shot dead on Saturday during a confrontation with agents. Officials claimed he posed a threat, but widely circulated video footage verified by U.S. media showed Pretti never drew a weapon. The footage captured agents firing at him moments after he was pepper-sprayed and forced to the ground.

Protesters marched through the city on Sunday, chanting “ICE out now” and “our streets,” while carrying signs reading “Stop killing us” and “Alex should be here.” Many gathered at a makeshift memorial near the site of the shooting, laying flowers and candles despite freezing temperatures that dropped to -20C.

The killing came less than three weeks after another Minneapolis resident, Renee Good, was fatally shot by an immigration agent just over a mile away. Both incidents have intensified scrutiny of President Donald Trump’s aggressive deportation campaign, which has seen thousands of federal agents deployed to Minneapolis.

Among the demonstrators was 73-year-old Coleen Fitzgerald, who wore a clown costume to mock the administration. “We can’t live like this. This is America. We’re supposed to be free, and they’re trying to take that away,” she said, holding a sign that read “Hire clowns, expect a circus.”

The crackdown has been particularly controversial in Minneapolis, home to one of the largest Somali immigrant communities in the United States. Federal agents have targeted the city following reports of alleged fraud involving Somali residents, a narrative Trump has repeatedly highlighted.

Local outrage has grown as residents accuse agents of heavy-handed tactics, with protesters insisting that the killings of Pretti and Good reflect a broader pattern of abuse. The demonstrations underscore the mounting tension between federal enforcement operations and communities demanding accountability and an end to violence.
