Islamabad, Jan 24 : Pakistan and Somalia have signed an agreement allowing visa-free entry for holders of diplomatic passports, marking a new chapter in their bilateral relations.
President Asif Ali Zardari met Somali Interior Minister Ali Yousuf in Islamabad and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening ties with African nations. The agreement was signed by Hamza Adan Haadoow, Permanent Secretary of Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and Dawood Muhammad Baraech, Special Secretary of Pakistan’s Ministry of Interior and Narcotics Control.
During the meeting, President Zardari emphasized Africa’s importance in global affairs and noted that this was the first official bilateral visit from Somalia to Pakistan in 35 years. He stressed Pakistan’s dedication to international efforts against transnational crime and narcotics trafficking, while also highlighting opportunities for broader cooperation.
Ali Yousuf expressed gratitude for the hospitality extended to him and his delegation, delivering a letter from the President of Somalia that conveyed greetings and reaffirmed the desire for stronger ties. He described Pakistan as a reliable partner and recalled the sacrifices of Pakistani peacekeepers who served under the United Nations in Somalia during the 1990s.
Both sides discussed enhancing collaboration in law enforcement and criminal justice, with the Somali minister praising Pakistan’s longstanding support for Somalia since its independence.
The agreement is expected to facilitate closer diplomatic engagement and pave the way for deeper cooperation between the two countries.
